In this edition of Vinyl Notes, I get to once again pay homage to the pioneers of Hip Hop, the most influential genre of music ever recorded (See past editions where I explain why).
KRS-One is one of the greatest lyricists and most versatile orators in the history of Hip Hop. A supporter of indie/underground, a prolific collaborator, an activist and political artist who has never been afraid to call out the corrupt and exploitive elements of the music industry or the most controversial events in our modern society. Undeniably, he has earned a seat at the table for the founding fathers along with legends like Grandmaster Flash, Public Enemy and Run-DMC.
What perhaps separates KRS-One from the original brethren is his resilience. He is not only known for the early tracks that helped to shape Hip Hop, this rapper has evolved with the genre and continues to release integral work. His collaborations alone demonstrate the longevity from Kid Capri, to Busta Rhymes, to REM, to Zach De La Rocha (former lead vocalist of Rage Against the Machine), to SUN-ONE. And he has released new music as recently as 2022.
KRS-One originally produced music under the moniker Boogie Down Productions in the 80s that first represented the collective vision with his friend, DJ and producer Scott La Rock. After the debut album Criminal Minded, La Rock was fatally shot. Keeping with the Boogie Down identity, KRS-One released the second album By All Means Necessary. I own the 12 inch release that includes two songs from this second studio album, Stop the Violence and Jimmy. It was released in 1988.
